Through the generosity of Domtar and its suppliers, the Carson Scholars Fund is pleased to announce the opening of the Ben Carson Reading Room at Old Pointe Elementary School. The grand opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 1 at 9:00 a.m. at Old Pointe Elementary School, 380 Old Pointe School Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
The Ben Carson Reading Project is an initiative of the Carson Scholars Fund. The Carson Scholars Fund was founded by retired, world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and New York Times bestselling authors Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy. The purpose of the Ben Carson Reading Project is to create a literacy enriched environment for children to develop their reading skills. The reading project is dedicated to promoting reading as a key to unlocking a child’s full potential.
“Students and teachers are so excited over the new reading room. The room is so inviting and the students can get ‘comfy’ with a good book. I think many of our students will ‘dream of possibilities’ while spending time reading in this room. I want to thank Domtar and their vendors, the Carson Scholars Fund, and Dr. and Mrs. Carson for this generous contribution to our school,” shared the Literacy Coach Sherry Moore. “I am really excited about the reading room! I love to read and having a cool place to read will even be more fun! Thank you Dr. Carson!” said Hartley White, third grader at Old Pointe Elementary School.
Mr. Charlie Floyd, Domtar’s VP of Operational Performance shared, “Domtar is proud to be a sponsor of the Ben Carson Reading Room at Old Pointe Elementary, and even more proud to have our employees volunteer to assist with its construction. With today’s ceremony we are halfway to our goal of opening 10 reading rooms across the country in communities where our employees and their families live and work. Domtar would also like to congratulate and thank all key corporate sponsors that donated generously to make today’s event a reality. When a child opens a book, he/she opens up a world of possibilities. We encourage the students at Old Pointe Elementary to ‘Think Big,’ and take advantage of the opportunity – become lifetime readers and you will surely be lifetime learners.”
Domtar and their vendors pride themselves on giving back to the communities they serve. Domtar first partnered with the Carson Scholars Fund in 2012 to open a reading room in Johnsonburg, PA. The Ben Carson Reading Room at Old Pointe Elementary is the fifth of ten new reading rooms to open through the Domtar partnership.
Currently, over 150 Ben Carson Reading Rooms have been established and are serving students in 19 states and Washington, D.C. To learn more about the Carson Scholars Fund visit www.carsonscholars.org.
