Options abound for students in Rock Hill and parents have an opportunity to learn more about the seven programs offered in 13 schools at Saturday’s information fair. Representatives from each program will be available to answer questions from 6- 8 p.m. on January 10 at Sullivan Middle School’s gym, 1825 Eden Terrace.

This is the first of two scheduled information fairs to highlight choice options in Rock Hill Schools. A second opportunity will be Thursday, January 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the Kenneth Monroe Transformation Center, 785 Saluda Street.

Choice programs available in Rock Hill include:
• Accelerated Studies offered at Sunset Park Center for Accelerated Studies
• Arts offered at Northside Elementary School of the Arts
• International Baccalaureate at Rosewood Elementary, Sullivan Middle, Northwestern High, Rock Hill High, and South Pointe High
• Inquiry offered at Ebenezer Avenue Elementary
• Language Immersion offered at Ebinport Elementary, Richmond Drive Elementary, and Rosewood Elementary
• Montessori offered at The Children’s School at Sylvia Circle
• Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) offered at Oakdale Elementary, Saluda Trail Middle, and South Pointe High

Traditionally, children are assigned to a public school according to where they live. Rock Hill Schools recognizes that each student is unique and our choice programs are designed to help meet those needs and to nurture students’ talents, interests and aptitudes. School choice programs foster parental involvement and high expectations, and give parents the opportunity to choose the school that will meet their child’s needs. This is not achieved at the expense of traditional schools. Rather, all of our schools offer outstanding instruction, high-quality teachers, and great facilities.

Various construction projects are on-going that will further improve facilities. A state-of-the-art makerspace is scheduled to open later this month at South Pointe High School. Additionally, construction will soon begin on a new Montessori building at Ebenezer Avenue Elementary School with a projected completion in December. Once completed, the Montessori program will move from The Children’s School at Sylvia Circle. A third choice-related construction project is the yet-to-be-named language immersion school that will be built on the campus of Sullivan Middle School. This new school, scheduled to open in August 2018, will consolidate three language immersions presently serving students at Ebinport, Richmond Drive, and Rosewood Elementary schools.

Families interested in having their child attend a choice program are required to complete an online application at bit.ly/iChooseRHSD. The application will close on February 17 and notification of acceptance will be made in early March.
New this school year, Rock Hill Schools began providing bus transportation for students participating in choice programs who may not have otherwise been able to attend a choice program.
