Rock Hill Schools was closed on Monday, September 11 in anticipation of high sustained winds in our area from Hurricane Irma. To prepare for days such as this where there is a loss of instructional time due to snow, extreme weather conditions, or other disruptions, Rock Hill Schools complies with state law by setting aside three make-up days in the board-approved and citizen community created annual academic calendar. The first of three days is Friday, February 16. School will now be in session on Friday, February 16 to make up September 11. The district opened on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, September 12. Please note that two-hour delays and early dismissals are allowed under state law and time missed is not required to be made up (S.C. Code of Laws §59-1-425 Part D).

Looking Ahead

There were two more scheduled make-up days on the academic calendar — Monday, February 19, 2018 (President’s Day) and Friday, March 30, 2018 (Good Friday and the day students/staff would otherwise begin Spring Break). If there is a need to close school for any reason prior to the scheduled make-up days, the district would use the next available day to make up time lost. For example: if there is a snow or ice event in January the caused students to miss one day of school, the district would use February 19. If an additional day is missed prior to March 30, schools would be open on March 30.

General Background & State Law Concerning Make-Up Days

The S.C. Code of Laws §59-1-425 relates to school closings due to snow, extreme weather conditions, or other disruptions. All districts must set aside three days in the annual academic calendar to be used as make-up days. The first three days missed due to snow, extreme weather, or other disruptions, must be made up. If more than three days are missed, the local school board of trustees, by a majority vote, may waive no more than three days. The State Board of Education has the authority to waive three additional make up days beyond the three forgiven by the local school district upon request.
