First-year social studies teacher Grant Jeffrey credits much of his success this year to his mentor, Misty Gray. One of more than 150 first-year teachers in Rock Hill Schools, Jeffrey nominated Gray to be receive the district’s first-ever Mentor Teacher of the Year Award.

In a surprise announcement Monday, May 6, Jeffrey shared the reasons his mentor was most deserving of the honor.

Among others, he mentioned:

  • Mrs. Gray made it abundantly clear that my growth toward success is paramount to hers.
  • Knowing that she has been teaching as long as she has while maintaining such optimism and desire for growth has done more for me as an educator than at any other stage of my prepatation for this career.
  • She helped me to set professional goals such as improving classroom management through assigned seats and additional structures.
  • She instills the prized growth mindset that every student and teacher requires to improve.
